Denver-based saxophonist Benjamin Porter is an active soloist, composer, educator and improviser looking to push the boundaries of what defines the modern musician. Adept in a variety of styles, Porter can be heard in a mixture of ensembles ranging from the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, to the Media Luna Latin Band, to the Ben Porter Jazz Quartet. Porter recently commissioned and premiered a new work for tenor saxophone and piano by Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer award winner, Quinn Dymalski. In 2024, Porter debuted a new ensemble dedicated to unifying his love of jazz and classical music through his own original compositions. The group merges a lush orchestral string sound with the driving hectic feel of the jazz quartet.
As an educator, Porter has over ten years of private lesson experience and his students have made All-State bands in New York, Massachusetts and Colorado. Ben currently serves as Director of Winds at the Denver Waldorf School. In 2022, Ben had the pleasure of working with the students at The University of Denver as the Interim Instructor of Saxophone where he taught private lessons and chamber music to undergraduate jazz and classical saxophone majors. His objective as a teacher is to cultivate musical excellence within students while fostering an encouraging, motivating and supportive environment.
Benjamin Porter holds a M.M. from The University of Denver and a B.M from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His past instructors include Lynn Klock, Jonathan Hulting-Cohen, Art Bouton and Remy Leboeuf.
